In and around Bury St Edmunds

We live in a great town. This week one of the moms from school went into town with me and we walked around the market, the abbey, the brewery area, the shops and houses. It was nice to have a bit of a guided tour since until now Tory and I had just been wandering aimlessly and hoping to find what we needed. It takes 15-20 minutes to get across town and its a nice walk. Between walking to school, the gym, into town, swim lesson, and other errands we really do a lot more walking than we ever did in Arizona.

Pretty much everything we need we can buy in town. Its hard to not recalculate every purchase into dollars though. Some things are available on base but the selection is limited. I am sure some things I will mail order to fill in what may be missing. The exchange rate is holding at about 1.58 right now.

The Abbey dates back to 600 and much of the ruins are open to walk around and the gardens are beautiful.

About 30 minutes from us towards Cambridge is the Duxford Air Museum. We went to the Battle of Britain airshow last week and enjoyed watching the airshow and walking though the displays and exhibits. The kids painted little models and it was a nice day to be outside.

And even closer to the house (maybe 3 miles away) is a National Trust historic property with a house you can tour and large gardens and a winery. I have been impressed with how child-friendly they have made these old manor homes and castles. Everywhere we have visited has had literature or audio guides for the kids. This home has a scavenger hunt card they follow where they try to find certain objects throughout the house.
So much to see and do. It is beautiful and green and the history is amazing.

Ickworth House also has a easter egg hunt (England-style, not candy-filled egges) timed perfectly when the daffodils bloom.
